I’ve always had dogs and find their unselfish companionship one of the great boons in life.

But I’ve always trained my dogs and am sometimes in despair when I see dogs taking their owners for a walk, with the owner totally under the animal’s control, darting across the path on one of those extensible leads. I’ve seen dogs off-lead being frantically called by their owners with absolutely no idea of what they are supposed to do,
