It’s an interesting question, right?
After more than two decades online, I’ve seen hundreds of business models come and go. I’ve watched people make fortunes and I’ve watched others waste years chasing the latest “can’t fail” opportunity.
The internet has changed dramatically since I first started helping people online in 2001.
But one thing has not changed:
The simplest business models are usually the most successful.
So if I were starting over today at 81, with limited time, limited energy, and no desire to gamble on risky schemes, these are the only three approaches I would seriously consider.
1. Building a Newsletter Around What I Know
If there is one lesson I’ve learned, it’s that experience has value.
Many people think they have nothing worth sharing because what they know seems ordinary to them.
But what is ordinary to you may be valuable to someone else.
Today, I would start a simple newsletter focused on topics I understand well:
- Online business
- Retirement lifestyle
- AI tools for everyday people
- Lessons learned from years of experience
I would not worry about becoming famous.
I would focus on helping a small group of people solve real problems.
If just 100 readers eventually decided my content was worth $10 per month, that would become a meaningful income stream.
More importantly, it would be something I could build steadily without needing large investments or complicated technology.
2. Creating Simple Digital Products
The second approach would be creating small digital products.
Not giant courses.
Not complicated membership sites.
Just practical resources that help people save time or avoid mistakes.
Examples might include:
- Checklists
- Guides
- Templates
- Short ebooks
- Resource collections
One of the great advantages of digital products is that you create them once and can sell them repeatedly.
After helping people online for many years, I can tell you that most people do not need more information.
They need better organization.
A clear checklist often has more value than a 300-page manual.
If I were starting over today, I would focus on creating useful resources that solve specific problems.
3. If I Had to Start Over at 81, I Would Teach How to Use AI
This may surprise some readers.
At 81, I have become increasingly interested in AI tools.
- Not because they are trendy.
- Not because they are magical.
- But because they can genuinely save time.
Many people are curious about AI but feel intimidated by it.
They hear technical language and assume it is only for experts.
That simply isn’t true!
Most modern AI tools are easier to learn than many software programs we used years ago.
If I were starting over, I would focus on helping ordinary people understand how to use AI in practical ways:
- Writing
- Research
- Organization
- Everyday productivity
The demand for simple, understandable guidance is growing rapidly.
And there are far fewer people teaching AI in plain English than you might think.

Equally important is what I would avoid.
I would stay away from:
- Get-rich-quick schemes
- Expensive opportunities promising overnight success
- Businesses requiring large investments
- Anything that sounds too good to be true
I’ve been online long enough to know that shortcuts are often the longest route of all to success!
