How And Who To Follow On Twitter
How and who to follow on Twitter to attract the right customers is a chapter in itself that needs to be addressed. I very often see Internet marketers making the same mistakes over and over, so I decided to write this article hoping that it will clarify a few things for them.
Unlike Facebook, linking on Twitter is much easier because it is much less engaging.
We do not speak of “friends” but of “followers” and nothing obliges you to follow a person who follows you and vice versa.
So, how to follow someone on Twitter?
But above all … WHO to follow?
I will give you a few answers, which hopefully will help you do it right.
Note: as Twitter has recently improved their platform, some of the guidelines below might differ a bit, but if you are acquainted with Twitter, you will soon find your way out. If not, please do not hesitate to post a comment at the bottom of this page and someone will soon come to your rescue – Sorry for the inconvenience.
Update 27 October 2019
That said, I guess that you might like to invite your Twitter followers to join in this tutorial. To do this, just login to your most relevant Twitter account and click on the bar below …
? How And Who To #Follow On #Twitter? – Do You Know How Important It Is to Know?.. Share on XAlso, if you have several Twitter accounts, you can repeat the operation by login into each one of them in turn.
So, let’s get started now …
1. How to follow someone on Twitter
This might not be a surprise to you, as there is nothing more simple than that. Go and get the person you want to follow via the Twitter’s search engine (top right of your profile page), by typing the username or nickname of that person. For example @biz_tips
(Speaking of which, not yet mastering the Twitter specific vocabulary? … Check ~~> Twitter Glossary)
Then, once on the profile of this user, you just have to press the “Follow” button as pictured below!
By the way, you will be able to see if this person is following you back or not at the bottom of his or her profile picture, thanks to the mention “FOLLOWS YOU“:
If you want to have an effective presence on Twitter for your activity (and therefore to be popular within this network), you will have to start by following people. As with all social networks, interaction is the foundation of success on Twitter.
Indeed, as we shall see in a future article on Twitter notifications, every time you follow someone on Twitter, this person will be alerted via notifications. And so will be informed in passing of your existence.
On the other hand, there is an implicit rule of courtesy on Twitter: it is good when someone follows you to follow him or her back. 🙂
Following others on Twitter is the best way to grow your community!

Done it? Great, let’s continue then …
2. Who to follow on Twitter?
1. Follow your target on Twitter
In priority your target will have to be your potential customers. Do a keyword search to find profiles that may interest you. Makes sense?
But your competitors have probably done this work for you, so why not take advantage of it?
One cool trick to discover more quickly the profiles likely to interest you is to start by following the followers of your competitors. So go on the profile of your competitors and on the tab “Subscribers“. You will surely discover what you are looking for … a treasure trove!
2. Follow your influencers on Twitter
But Twitter is also a great observing platform and you would be wrong not to take advantage of it!..
Follow the most influential people of your industry, your “gurus” and take advantage of their watch.
Once you have found their profile, to make sure you do not miss out on tweets from your favorite influencers, you can take advantage of the “Lists” feature.
A list, what is it?
The lists on Twitter allow you to organize the people you follow by theme. This will help you to follow their news more easily (for info, you can add a Twitter account to a list without being subscribed to this account).
To create a list in 3 clicks:
Once on your profile, go to the rightmost tab: “Lists“, then click on the “Create a list” button.
Then, to add a user to a list, go to his / her profile, then click on the configuration icon (next to the “follow / subscriber” button) and finally on “Add or remove from your lists…“.
Otherwise, even easier! You can subscribe to an already existing list … Look at the lists of your influencers, your competitors and help yourself.
For this, again, just 3 clicks:
- Search for the profile in Twitter’s search engine, by typing the profile name.
- Go to the “Lists” tab and then to the name of the list.
- Here you just have to click on the button at the top left “Subscribe“, below the name of the list. Easy !
Then enjoy these interesting tweets and share them to your own community!
Again, the influencer will be alerted by a notification when you add it to a list. Another way to increase your popularity!
3. Follow your future partners on Twitter
Finally, you can go looking for your future partners. People whose activities are complementary to yours, with whom you could associate to develop your business together. In short, in your online networking line of work (essential to the success of your site), Twitter is probably the first step.
Twitter (as LinkedIn) is indeed a direct, and very effective, way to contact your recipient. In a more professional way than Facebook and less impersonal than going through the contact form of a website.
Once you have reached a certain number of followers, make sure you keep them:
- Try to maintain a certain frequency of publications (even to automate some) and keep your account active. Be respectful to your followers and do not leave your Twitter account abandoned (error too often made!)
- Do not fall into the pitfalls too often committed by Twitter beginners, like constant self-promotion.
A word of warning: Although you will tend to follow the whole world when opening your Twitter account, to show your presence, Twitter limits the number of subscriptions according to the number of your followers.
So you will sometimes have to stop following certain people to follow others. To know who to “Unfollow“, you can use tools like Tweepi, which will allow you to identify profiles that do not follow you back. And so make sure to “Unfollow” them without regret!
But here I must add a word of wisdom: Do not unfollow “en masse” in order to be able to follow more new Twitter users. Twitter really does not like that and might suspend your account for “inappropriate behavior“.
That’s it, now you know everything about how and who to follow on twitter!
However, this tutorial would not be complete without these two most important chapters …
Fake followers …
That’s right, they do exist, and no matter how tempted you may be to purchase a number of followers … DO NOT, and I mean it, DO NOT buy followers from any sources, no matter how serious they may look like, the followers you will receive will be 99% fake account!
What will happen when you have these “fake followers”?
Well, fake followers are people that do not exist! They have been created by automated programs called bots (for robots). You usually can recognize them by …
- Their names (handle) that are often like “rtsfe1845” or “love95823”
- They usually have only a few follower and only one or two “Tweets” on their profile
- They often don’t have a profile picture, and …
- No account header image
Now, I am afraid to break it to you, but bots have become extremely sophisticated. They are now able to produce fake Twitter accounts that have …
- A proper name like you and me
- Some followers, sometime a lot of them
- They now have a real person’s profile picture and …
- A proper account header image
What to do then?
Simple, and I repeat … DO NOT buy Twitter followers for any reasons!
Why? Well first of all Twitter doesn’t like that and they might suspend your account, or worse, ban it forever. Then, I have never heard of a non-existant person making a purchase online, have you?
But I need a lot of followers to read my messages!
NO you don’t need a lot of followers to read your messages and buy your products and / services. What you need is to learn how to use hashtags (#)!
An hashtag is this little but extremely powerful little character (#) that you place in front of a word, like #marketing #business, etc. which can amplify your reach to infinity!
Which means that even if you have only 5 followers on your Twitter account and you use one or two trending hashtags in your Tweet, it will be seen by thousands, and maybe millions of other Twitter users!
How do they work and how to use #hashtags?
I have written a complete tutorial that can be read at: Successful Social Media Hashtag Campaigns. So, I suggest that you have a good read at this very important topic.

Oh, wow! I thought I already knew how to use Twitter, but I seriously didn’t get the news about “lists”. I’m gonna make lists today. And start looking for my “future partners” too! Great info & advice. Do you think you can offer up a list of writing prompts, or suggestions of what to talk about for Twitter? I find that can be an issue for posting regularly. Thank you!
Glad to see you again on my website and thanks for taking the time to comment on my “How And Who To Follow On Twitter” blog post. You might also be interested in having a look at this article too: Share On Social Media, enjoy it.
One thing to remember is that Twitter, as all social platforms, are places intended to socialise, therefore links, especially affiliate links are not welcome. Therefore it is best to share tips, motivational quotes, recipes, etc., especially if you want to gain fans and followers, as opposed to losing some. Of course, as an Internet Marketer, you want to promote your business, so, the rule of thumb is to post at least 4 – 5 none promotional messages for one with a URL.
Also, social media have recently decided that affiliate links are not welcome, so, if your line of business if to promote affiliate products or services, you will need to do that through a website or blog. This is not a problem as you can create niche websites in literally minutes, and for free. Hi John,
Thanks so much for your article on how and who to follow on twitter so that will help boost our business to progress. I like the idea of following the followers of your competitors, since you’re in the same business, it means that getting their followers will be a very good idea and will enhance the progress of the business as well.
Also, I think following my influencers is a very good thing to do. I will also look at the list and then work on my future business partners. I really like all the stuff and good information you have shared with us.
I’m going to follow you too on the links you shared with us. Thanks so much for the valuable information you have shared with us.
Stephen.
I am glad that my article proved to be useful to you Stephen, and thanks for commenting on it. It is definitely the best way to build up your list of Twitter followers very quickly and making sure that you follow people that have the same interests as yours, and are in the same niche. The only thing is to make sure that you only follow people who seem to be real and active.
One way to do that is by their username, for example avoid following users that are @johnsmith1234 or @qwerty09876, and have hundreds of thousand of followers and have posted only 2 or 3 Tweets. Just use some common sense really.

Thank you for this great article. I have not gotten into Twitter but it is a step in my online business plan. Until I started an online business I didn’t see much reason to go on Twitter. Your article is helpful because I’m a complete beginner to Twitter. Actually I’ve only tried using the interface once or twice, and couldn’t get my tweet to go through or something. I don’t know what Twitter’s like but I’d probably be careful not to follow so many people that my Twitter feed gets over-loaded. On the other hand with other things like YouTube I subscribe to pretty much everyone but I just never actually keep up with the notifications, because of too many. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing your experience (or no experience rather) with Twitter. So, it is about time that you get started and by following my tutorial you should be fine. Let me know if you have any questions or need any help, okay?
Best wishes,
John
I have a business profile on twitter and I really have no idea how to run it or increase my followers. All I just do is to post content about my business which is a website and maybe follow one or two people. I am not really active and I even tend to abandon my twitter account sometimes.
Building that followers list is really difficult and I just don’t know how to do it. Most times when you follow people they just refuse to follow you back. Everyone is thinking about themselves and not others. Sometimes some even follow you and later unfollow you as soon as you follow them back. This has become a common practice in the platform as most people want to have more followers than the number of people they personally follow.
Thanks for sharing your views on your Twitter account Manuel. Well I hope that my article will put you on the right track and that it will enable you to follow the RIGHT people who will not just unfollow you the moment you follow them back, these are most likely those that I am talking about who are risking to be suspended by Twitter.
Anyway keep doing what I am explaining in my tutorial and with patience you will be fine.
It does take time to build a good and responding Twitter account. I have started my main Twitter account in January 2009 and it is now reaching its 100,000 good, faithful and responsive followers. I have to regularly post something of interest on it and clear it of its unwanted followers.
One thing that I didn’t talk about in my tutorial, which I am going to add to it right now, is the importance of never, EVER, and I main NEVER buy followers from any sources, no matter how promising it may be, your purchased followers will be 99% fake accounts. That’s a guarantee!
So, I wish you the very best Manuel and be patient with your Twitter account.
John
