How To Create A Niche Website ?
How to create a niche website? This is certainly the hardest question all new comers to online marketing has to answer. I have decided to write this article in trying to answer this question while sharing my over 15 years of online marketing experience.
Today I will put myself in the shoes of the newbie that I was back then and show you a few tips that helped me make my living with niche sites.
I am sure that this approach will please you and that it will give you another example of how to break free from miserable wage labor, you know, the 9 to 5, 6 or 7 rat race, and also how to manage your time!
It was while browsing the net a few days ago that I came across this graph on the right. This, plus the result of a survey conducted on the subscribers to this site regarding the reasons why they had not yet launched a business themselves yet.
As a result, I was immediately struck by the fact that the main reasons given were the lack of means, ideas and time.
So, the purpose of this article is to show you how you can solve these 3 problems easily and start safely, cheaply, and with the little time you have in a profitable business: creating niche sites.
I launched my first sites in 2002 or 2003
Today, I live on the income generated by the fifteen websites, and blogs, that I manage. Some generate a few dollars, others more than 1000 dollars per month.
Their common points are:
- They bring me money each and every month
- All of them were created in relatively short time
- Almost without any cost
- And they do not require more than 1 or 2 hours (in all!) of work per week
So let’s take apart these 3 main reasons that may prevent you from getting started. Because to create an extra regular and sustainable income of about US$500 per month, in just a few months and less than 2 hours of work per week, if I managed to do it, you can also get there! And so is just about anybody.
The 3 (false) excuses that hold you back
Personally, I believe that systematically finding excuses is the main enemy of failure. I also think that it should be considered a disease, which can be a chronic condition. I call this condition “excusite“. Don’t waste your time looking for it in the English dictionary, you will not find it. But it is in the French dictionary, and maybe in other languages. I guess that it will be entered in the English dictionary one day. Why not? It really should. What do you think?
Some chronic conditions can be treated, some can’t. But the good news is that excusite can be treated!
What is REALLY getting between you and the realization of your dreams? Often, the answer is: yourself.
Even the most optimistic of us can be seduced by the realm of excuses.
To find excuses, which we then call excusite, is the worst enemy of success. As I said that this chronic disease is curable, we are going to find out how in just a minute. Let’s start with the first one …
Create a Niche Website: Excuse N ° 1: Lack of means
I assume here that we are talking about financial means, and that the people who answered this have an apprehension in relation to the cost necessary to launch their activity. Did you know that you could start a website zero dollars?
Exactly! In a previous article I explained How To Create A Free WordPress Website (In Minutes). This is something worth looking at, as it is all inclusive, hosting, training (the best available), 24 hours support, etc. And that’s absolutely everything you need to get yourself on the road.
Sure, you could invest in a paid WordPress theme, or hire a designer to create your site, but that could be very expensive, and what’s the point?
I like to give the example of the well known founder of Craigslist, Craig Newmark, you know, this site of free ads launched in 1995 and has not changed a bit since? Its founder simply did not consider that it was important to improve the design of a site that worked very well in the state it has always worked, and that perfectly met the expectations of its users.
By saving on design, and focusing on what his visitors wanted, Craig Newmark created a site that now generates more than 50 million unique visitors per month.
So keep your money, start with the minimum, and focus on creating quality content. Visitors will come by themselves, and the income that goes with it. You can then ask yourself whether it is useful or not to envisage a budget to improve your site.
Create a Niche Website: Excuse N ° 2: I have no business ideas
Stop looking everywhere, the good idea may be right under your nose.
When we start a niche site, and this is especially important for the first one, the first rule is to be passionate. If we start with the sole objective of earning money as soon as possible, it is already lost in advance.
Remember this rule:
Your site’s revenue comes from your visitors. If your visitors do not find anything interesting on your site, they will not buy anything, will not click on any banner, and will not speak or share your site with anyone.
So make a list of your passions. Your everyday activities. Where would you like to go? And ask yourself how, from that, what could you start writing about it.
- Are you passionate about hiking? Why not start a blog on the subject where you would tell your escapades, give advice, test products, to help other enthusiasts (or just curious people to try it) to learn more about this activity? You could then sell your own guide, or make money through the sale of products.
- Would you like to learn a foreign language? Why not do like this American girl from Phoenix, Arizona, Kristin Espinasse, who just after arriving in France, launched her blog in the name of “French word-a-day” to share her learning of the language and anecdotes of her expatriate life in the south of France. She is now making a living from this site.
- Do you work as an accountant and are an expert in Excel spreadsheets? Why not create your site and publish tutorials to help those who, like me, have a little trouble getting by when it comes to making formulas a little complicated? Video training, guide, private lessons … Income possibilities are many!
As you see, it’s pretty simple finally to come up with some great ideas. And if you really get stuck at this point, you can make use of this free keyword research tool, called Jaaxy, which will give you hundreds of niche ideas. This will get you on the go without risk and with maximum chances of success.
Create a Niche Website: Excuse N ° 3: not yet had the time
Hard to say to a person who works 40 hours or more a week that they are just not well organized. It would be insulting, and not necessarily true.
What is true, however, is that everyone has time. Simply, everyone does not organize their free time (no matter how short) in the same way. Because whatever your schedule, and as busy as it is, you can always find 15 minutes to devote yourself to a project. After all, 15 minutes to do something you love, and get closer to a dream of financial self-worth it’s worth the cost right?
I have written an extensive tutorial, which I have broken up into 4 parts, which can show you just exactly where you can find all the time you need in your typical day, to get your business going. The first part is called How To Make Money From Home In Your Spare Time – Part 1
Briefly, here is what you could do if you had 15 minutes a day to spare:
- Find a niche idea for your future project
- Register for a free training and learn how to install a WordPress site
- Search 5 keywords for your next articles
- Prepare an article plan (all explained in the free training)
- Read or watch 2 or 3 videos on the subject you are dealing with
- Contact 2 or 3 bloggers in your field to interact with them (interview, questions, etc.)
- Reply to 5 emails from your readers
And so on…
Let’s take a break, and in the main time …

How to create a niche website – The secret ?
Do not try to do everything at once. If your time is precious and counted, divide your tasks. Divide them into little simple and quick things to do in 15 minutes a day. You will have the feeling of having accomplished something each day and will keep the motivation to continue even with little time to devote to your new website.
Finally, learn to hire the services of freelancers! This might be necessary for the second site. But did you know that for a few dollars you could for example get a very good article written by a freelance copywriter via a platform like Fiverr?
If you do not have the time to write, or you just feel that you are not “good” at writing, let someone else do it for you. $10 or $15 to save 1 hour or 2 of your time and some sweats, it’s cheap to pay!
Conclusion:
As you have seen, nothing prevents you from getting going. There is no excuse!
All the excuses that we have researched in this article are legitimate, but more often than not, they are due to a lack of proper guidance. Now that you have some understanding and proof in hand, it is up to you.
You will not become rich overnight and be able to leave your day job next week, but by devoting the minimum amount of free time you have to a project of this program, you will be getting closer every day to the day when you will be able to really run your own profitable business.

Hi John,
Excellent article – Any excuse will do really! When people are looking for excuses or giving excuses for not doing something they are really just listing down reasons not to do it – whatever it may be. I call these people excusers!.
I really like the graph of failure rate pretty interesting after the initial peak I am theorising that with time people become more tired of the 9-5 and much more determined to succeed, hence a reducing failure rate. Great article!
Thanks so much for commenting on my “How To Create A Niche Website ?” blog post Derek. I see that you are a regular visitor to my website, so I imagine that you enjoy reading my articles. I am glad to know that.
As you know, more and more people are turning to working from home for the many reasons we know:
– Less jobs available
– Forever increasing cost of commuting
– Necessity to have two or more income streams in a household
– etc. etc.
So yes, working from home online is really the way forward. But one thing that we shouldn’t underestimate though, is that it is necessary to learn how to do that properly if we really want to succeed in “Firing the boss“. For that it is necessary to learn from some reputable online training, such as ~~> Wealthy Affiliate.
I wish you the very best Derek.

Dear John,
Thanks a lot for the great informative post on How To Create A Niche Website?. When I started my blogging career I was stuck and not sure, on what I need to create my website or on choosing my Niche.
To be honest, I nearly spent two months in order to choose my niche…
Your topic on “I have no business ideas” is awesome on determining the niche and I strongly believe it will act as a blueprint for many. Thanks for the advice!
I am going to take your advice and focus on creating quality content. Once again I gained a lot of knowledge from your blog post (As always).

I love how you present the three biggest excuses that hold people back. They are all so true. So many people without education and means have succeeded so why should we not believe we also can? All it takes is enormous patience because when you start, the enthusiasm is big but after a few months or maybe a year there can be self-doubt and impatience.
I have also started with the Wealthy Affiliate program and now I have two niche websites. It is not always easy to find enough time to write and study everything necessary to succeed, but after a year I can see some commissions coming, and even though they are not big, they are what keeps me going.
Thanks very much for taking the time to comment on my article and to share your experience with affiliate marketing Lenka. Because of your patience and determination you are now on your way to success.
I wish you the very best and if you have any questions or need any help please do not hesitate to contact me at any time, okay?
Cheers,
John
