How To Increase Website Conversion Rate ? – 10 Cool Tips
How to increase website conversion rate is yet another question that regularly comes up on forums and webinars. Also, one of my regular readers brought up the matter in a comment, so to keep my promise to him, I wrote this article. Here it is:
- What is the role of titles? … first of all, it is to encourage clicks!
- Do you regularly send emails to communicate with your prospect? … The first goal is for your readers to want to open your email.
- Do you monetize your site with Adsense links? … Maybe not.
Here is how to increase website conversion rate:
In this article I am going to give you 10 very useful tips to increase your click rate:
- The importance of a high click rate
- What is the click rate?
- How to increase a click rate?
- To increase the CTR of a website …
- The larger the object, the more it will receive clicks
- Color helps to encourage a click
- The click intent zone
- Unity is strength
- To increase the click rate on the title of an email …
- Here is a rule of thumb
- A bonus chapter
1 – The importance of a high click rate
The click rate also called CTR (Click Through Rate) is extremely important and in many ways.
Not only will a high click rate mean that what you have to say seems to be interesting, but above all this click rate is now analyzed, dissected and taken into account in all search engine algorithms.
Does your page have a low click rate? It will be immediately taken into account by the search engines and your ranking will be penalized. Therefore, your site needs to record a high click rate to both increase:
- The number of pages visitors will view
- Decrease the bounce rate of your site
When you send an email, your recipient must have no choice but to click on the email. And why? Simply because you must not send an email with the same content 3 times to the same audience.
Those who will click the first time on the email will not want to receive the same email several times. Because, if you do this, the risk is to have you declared as a spammer with ISPs. For the reason that in terms of communication by email, you should not mess up here.
For Adsense, the equation is simple: 1 click = 1 income for you.
2 – What is the click rate?
The click rate is the ratio between the number of clicks obtained on a link, an email, an image reduced to the number of displays of the object in question.
Very concretely, take the example of a link placed on a site: a click rate (ctr) is the number of clicks (7, 10, 40, …) for 100 impressions, link displays.
This rate will depend on a lot of parameters that we will see below: the size of the object on the site, the color, its integration, the absence of bug, good behavior on hover (the modification of the link when you move the mouse over the link), the location of the link on the page … Therefore, all these parameters put end to end will influence the rate of click on the object.
3 – How to increase a click rate?
First of all, there is no science to increase a click rate. There are obviously some tricks but no absolute rule. Everything depends on your site, your mail … hence, the empirical method is the best; and above all, learning by testing.
To begin with, equip yourself with the right tools to properly measure the tests …
To test in the best possible way, you should make use of measurement tools like Google Website Optimizer which allows you to do an A/B testing.
You can also try a visual website optimizer. These sorts of tools are not lacking to test your site, but some are very expensive and difficult to use and understand. Therefore, for that matter, I use a little program called Clicky which allows me to easily return just the results I need, and, first of all, no unnecessary fluff to impress me.
You can also make the global change on the entire site if the stakes are not important (in the case of a blog for example). Also, in the case of a large merchant website, it will be more difficult knowing that there are thousands of Dollars at stake …
Here are some elements for you to test to increase your click rate, on a website and an email:
4 – To increase the CTR of a website …
The top of the website or blog receives more clicks than the bottom of the page. This is a trend seen on many sites.
An object is all the more likely to receive clicks if it is at the top of the site than towards the bottom.
Why? When the user arrives at your site, he or she will first see the items that are above the fold. So, the fold is what is visible on the screen of the surfer on his arrival (the fold, or line of flotation will depend on the size of the screen of the computers of your net surfers – this information can be found in all the tools web analytics like Google analytics).
The user will judge a site in just a fraction of seconds and will therefore make a maximum of clicks on the top of the page. This is especially true for an e-trader who will want to present his best offers at the top of the page.
Below is an example of a good “Call To Action” which leads to another CTA which is “above the fold“:
5 – The larger the object, the more it will be receive clicks
Want to increase the click rate to a specific item? This will be difficult if the link or offer has a large number of pixels on the page. You must therefore ensure that the links or clickable areas important to you for your business have the right level of visibility.
Avoid the hidden message in a logo at the bottom of the page or a link that is almost invisible to the user.
Here is a good example …
6 – Color helps to encourage a click
Choosing a color on a site is also important to push (or not!) the click.
The art becomes subtle: it is necessary that the link is visible but that, at the same time, it is integrated with the chart of your site.
On Adsense links, we know from experience that the blocks with colors embedded in the graphic chart of the site encourage to click. If the Adsense block is not surrounded by a border, it will click all the more.
The colors must be integrated but must stand out for the user. Too much integration has the effect of drowning the link and thus making it invisible to the user.
Here again, the secret is to carry out numerous tests and, first of all, to follow analytically the results obtained with each test.
You must also polish the hovering behavior of the link. A link should always be underlined when the user passes the mouse over it and the mouse pointer changes to the “hand”. Some lines of css should suffice for that (a subject in itself that will be discussed in a later post – promised).
7 – The click intent zone
The click intent zone is where the user is most likely to click. For example, there is nothing worse on a site than an Adsense ad unit located in the middle of an article as it is often seen.
The user begins to read an article and right at the moment he or she is getting really interested, there is an ad unit. This is more disturbing than anything else in terms of user experience.
If we think about when the user is likely to click on a site, some places seem spontaneously more favorable than others. The navigation area for example is the perfect place where the user is expected to click.
The navigation should be as much as possible grouped in a single area on a site: avoid the double bar on the right and left. An Adsense link will receive more clicks if it is located in this area.
Another favorable place to clicks is the end of an article.
If the user has taken the time to read an article or to consult the entire page, it is because he found it interesting. He would have not gone before otherwise. So presenting a block of links at the bottom of a page can be good in terms of CTR.
But, there are some exceptions (sorry about that). It is known that visitors to a website or blog take the time to read the “above the fold” information, get interested, but not enough to read your complete description. Then goes straight to the bottom of the page to see how much your product or service costs. If your price is right, you have the sell. Or, he might come back to the top and read all that have to say about the product to convince himself.
I am one of those, you might be one too. To be honest with you, I hate sales pages that never end; filled with tons of “free gifts” and “honest” reviews from “actual” users.
8 – Unity is strength to increase website conversion rate
A small link alone will be less likely to trigger a click than a block of 5 or 8 links. This zone of links thus created will push the user to click at least on a link.
It’s exactly the same as for stores that are in the same type of products that are grouped in the same neighborhood. You’ve probably noticed that children’s stores tend, like restaurants, to end up all in the same area, or street: a group draws traffic. And a group of links attracts attention.
9 – To increase the click rate on the title of an email …
To increase the click rate on an email, to push the user to open what you just sent him, is a little bit tricky. First of all, the title must be as catchy as possible.
Your email is in competition with dozens of mails users receive daily in each box. You need to make the user want to click on your email and for that, there is no secret: it all depends on the chosen wording.
10 – Here is a rule of thumb:
If your titles do not make you want to click, there is a good chance that this is the same case for those who will receive the email. As simple as that.
The most catchy titles are those that arouse the curiosity of the user.
As you have been reading this far, I thought that you should be rewarded. So as a bonus chapter, here are a few examples of headlines that work well for me:

Noticed the (…) 3 dots at the end of the titles?
It is called “Ellipsis”, or more commonly “triple-dot”, or “suspension point”. This seems to have the effect of indicating to the reader that there is more awaiting for him and appears to stir up his curiosity. I often use it on titles.
And you can even become some sort of a magician, and hypnotize your readers
So here are 10 Hypnotic words you can ‘instantly’ use …
We have good reasons to believe that certain words that end in “ly” can be sneakily placed within your blog post to gently and, as a result, hypnotically persuade your visitors. They can also be used in your titles:
- easily
- obviously
- clearly
- evidently
- apparently
- certainly
- slowly
- powerfully
- nicely
- instantly
So, lots for you to experiment on, remember to multiply the tests: it’s worth it!

Hi,
From my research Google itself makes implementing conversion tracking incredibly easy and paid search is typically a direct response marketing channel, which means that most of your conversions should be directly attributable to clicks on specific campaigns. Improved conversion rates are the key goal for any decent digital marketer, conversion tracking is so easy in Google Ads, you’d think that every marketer would have great conversion tracking in place.
Thank you.
Aluko.

In this saturated internet world, it’s darn near impossible to catch people’s attention – BUT not totally impossible! John, you have shared so much great stuff here. There is a definite psychology to getting people to click on something. When it comes to websites, and emails for that matter, we used to use an old-fashioned term “above the fold”.
That phrase comes from the old days in New York City when riders sitting on the subway had the lower portion of the newspaper in their lap. Therefore, they could see the top of the page best. So, you would want your message on the top of the page, OR “above the fold” in order to have a greater chance of being seen.
Thanks so much for explaining where the expression “above the fold” comes from Marsha. I knew about it ever since I have been writing content for my websites, but didn’t know where it came from originally.
Being a curious person, I paid your very interesting website a visit (through your Gravatar profile) and bookmarked it for further visits. I took this opportunity to post a comment on one of your articles. Good work Marsha!
I wish you the very best for your online projects.
